The UK to Ban Sale and Supply of Plastic-containing Wet Wipes
According to a report by Agence France-Presse (AFP), the UK Department for Environment issued a statement on November 18 announcing a ban on the sale and supply of plastic-containing wet wipes. It pointed out that such products not only cause environmental pollution but also are a major culprit behind sewer blockages.
The new regulations will take effect in early 2027, which will make rivers, lakes and beaches cleaner, and better protect wildlife. A study by the UK water industry research organization found that 94% of sewer blockages are caused by wet wipes, costing water companies approximately £200 million (around S$342 million) in annual maintenance expenses.
The new rules target only plastic-containing wet wipes, which experts say are particularly harmful to the environment. However, exemptions will apply in certain circumstances, such as wet wipes used by medical professionals. Registered pharmacies may still sell plastic-containing wet wipes on the condition that these products are not directly displayed or promoted to customers.
